For all your help...

We thank all the volunteers who helped make this second Saco River Cleanup and first combined Swift & Saco River Cleanup a success! On the Saco we had about 80 volunteers for the weekend, some of whom went out in the pouring rain on Sunday and did a great job of removing trash from the river! Saturday we had a great group who covered from Walker’s Bridge in Fryeburg to Woodland Acres Campground in Brownfield. We had a nice, sunny, warm day and we were able to remove a large amount of trash and have a blast doing it.

The River Runners, including their leader, Bob, cleaned the river Monday through Thursday during the summer months and deserve a huge thank you for their efforts in keeping up with the trash all summer. For all those who go unnoticed and take it upon themselves to go on the river and pick up the trash, thank you! We just have to get the 10% of the people that are using this river and trashing it to take out what they bring in. …or else!

We would also like to thank the Saco River Recreational Council and The Nature Conservancy for all of their help throughout the summer in maintaining the river by sponsoring the River Runners, as well as educators who are out there on the weekends trying to teach the canoers about Leave No Trace and how to respect our river! Thank you also to SRRC and TNC for all of their help and cooperation in getting this cleanup organized, and to all the canoe companies who participated and provided canoes and manpower. It wouldn’t have been possible without all of you. Stefan Jackson of TNC and Bob Taglieferri of Saco Bound and SRRC, thank you for all of your support! Thank you to the TNC interns, Cory, Dan, and Carly, for the great job on the T-shirts, the website and the flyers and for being group leaders on the clean up days and going out in the rain! You guys are great!

Thank you to Eric from Fiddlehead for donating campsites for volunteers, and for taking your boat out on Sunday in the pouring rain to help the volunteers with their trash. Thank you to the people who separated and recycled the trash we took off the river. Thanks Tim for helping to put the tarps up in the rain and for all of your support and good work throughout the summer.

Thank you to the Swift River Local Advisory Committee, especially Kathy Carrier and Bob Parish, for your participation. It’s too bad we had the rain on Sunday which caused some volunteers to cancel, but there were some die-hards who got out there anyway, and to you we say thank you!

We would like to especially like to thank all the businesses that donated towards this event:
As you can see it takes a lot of people to make this event a success and we appreciate every one of you and look forward to working with you all again next year. We will continue to do these cleanups until we don’t have to anymore. Wouldn’t it be nice to see people treating this river with respect? There is no other river like the Saco, and it takes all of us to protect it.
